Construction of new track is primarily done by the customer with IAIS installing the mainline turnout only. The Customer is responsible for designing, constructing, inspecting, and maintaining industry track. Additional details and check lists can be found in the Industry tracks specifications.
Access to IAIS row can be gained by requesting access from the IAIS engineering department. Prior to granting access, IAIS will require a liability release, contractor orientation training, and General liability Insurance. Please allow 15-30 days for paperwork to be complete
IAIS maintains copies of right-of-way and valuation maps in the Cedar Rapids Office. Digital copies of maps may be available upon request. There may be a fee for digital maps to offset costs of digitizing.

There is a $750 engineering review fee per location. Payment should be included with paper copy submittals.
Applicants wishing to cross railroad right-of- way by existing easements or other legal methods, should indicate this in the application and cover sheet.
When performing work on IAIS property, track protection, Contractor Orientation Training, General liability insurance, and Railroad Protective Insurance will be required.
IAIS requires an agreement with the letting agency and will require the letting agency to include provisions for working on IAIS ROW in their contract. This is to ensure that IAIS agrees with the project plans and scope prior to being let. IAIS is not responsible for delays to projects that do not have approval from IAIS prior to the project letting and is not obligated to allow contractors onto its ROW.
If the project includes work on IAIS property, IAIS Contractor Orientation, track protection services, General liability insurance, and Railroad protective insurance will be required.
